How Do Solar Panels Work?

Discover the process by which sunlight is converted into usable electricity in your home.

From the Sun to Your Home

  1. 1

    Solar Capture

Solar panels capture solar radiation and convert it into direct current through the photovoltaic effect.

  2. 2

    Current Conversion

The inverter transforms direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) that appliances can use.

  3. 3

    Distribution

Electricity is distributed throughout your home, powering your electrical devices and reducing grid dependence.

  4. 4

    Excess to the Grid

Surplus energy is fed into the electrical grid, generating credits on your electricity bill according to current regulations.

How a solar system works

Did you know?

The Dominican Republic receives more than 2,300 hours of sun per year with an average solar irradiation of 1.6 MWh/kWp, making it an ideal country to harness solar energy. The country has ideal conditions that exceed by 50% the solar irradiation available in countries like Switzerland.

Frequently Asked Questions

We answer your most common questions about solar photovoltaic energy.

How long does it take to install a solar system?

Installation time varies depending on the system size and installation complexity. For a typical home, physical installation usually takes 1 to 3 days. However, the complete process, including design, permits, and paperwork with the electric company (EDESUR, EDENORTE, or EDEESTE), can take 3 to 6 weeks.

Do I need batteries for my solar system?

Not necessarily. Most of our installations are grid-connected (on-grid) systems that don't require batteries. These systems use the electrical grid as backup when there isn't enough solar generation. However, if you want complete energy independence or live in an area with frequent outages, we can design a hybrid or off-grid system with batteries.

What maintenance does a solar system require?

Solar systems require very little maintenance. Primarily, periodic panel cleaning to remove dust and dirt is recommended (1-4 times a year, depending on local conditions) along with an annual electrical system review. There are no moving parts to wear out, which significantly reduces maintenance costs.

What happens during power outages?

Standard grid-connected systems automatically shut down during a power outage for safety reasons. Since the Dominican Republic experiences frequent power outages, we recommend considering a hybrid system with batteries that allows operation in isolated mode during these service interruptions.

What is the lifespan of a solar system?

Solar panels have a 25-year performance warranty but can continue operating for 30-35 years with gradual degradation. Inverters typically have 10-12 year warranties and may need replacement once during the system's lifespan. The mounting structure is designed to last as long as the panels.

What happens with the energy I don't use?

In the Dominican Republic, the net metering system allows the energy you don't use to be fed back into the grid and compensated on your electricity bill as an energy credit. With over 17,500 registered users in the program, it is a consolidated system that allows you to use these credits during periods when your consumption exceeds your generation.

Can I finance my solar system?

Yes, we offer several financing options adapted to different needs and financial profiles. We work with banking entities specialized in renewable energy that offer terms of up to 10 years. Additionally, you can take advantage of tax incentives such as credits of up to 75% of the investment cost against income tax, which significantly reduces the initial cost.

What happens if I move?

If you sell your property, the solar system stays as part of it, increasing its market value. Various studies show that properties with solar systems sell faster and at better prices. If you're in a rental property, we need to analyze your specific case, as authorization from the owner is normally required for installation.

What is the future of solar energy in the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic has ambitious goals for renewable energy. The country aims for 25% of its energy matrix to come from renewable sources by 2025, with solar energy playing a key role. Currently, the country already has 1.4 GW of installed renewable capacity and over 17,500 users in the net metering program, demonstrating sustained growth in the sector.
